4 C’s of Dementia Care Training

What are the 4 C's of Dementia Care Training?

SquarePeg Training delivers online and in-person dementia care training.  Our values are based in resources that are co-developed with people with a learning disability, creative in delivery methods, seek to achieve change in practice and increase confidence among staff and families who provide support. So what are our 4 C’s of dementia care training and why does this matter?

Co-developed – expert advisors with learning disabilities (some with dementia) meet throughout the year in different parts of Scotland. This directly informs development of new material and resources.

Creative – there is flexibility in delivery of training with plans in place for new training tools that reflects the importance of live facilitation but recognises sector challenges of releasing staff for attendance.

Change in practice – at SquarePeg we support organisations to take a more holistic approach. Rather than seeing people with a learning disabilities and dementia in isolation, we endorse a wider approach to supporting an ageing population of people with a learning disability – some of whom will also have dementia.

Confidence – an increase in confidence is crucial to this. It reflects the need for confidence of learning disability support staff when working with individuals who also have dementia, and confidence among care staff (especially care home) when supporting people with a learning disability.

Take a look at some of our co-produced resources such as Andrew’s Cards and Jenny’s Diary to see how to apply these principles in practice.
